How to Tell Whether a Gaming Download Is Safe

Closed thread Closed by archive

A friend sent me a gaming utility link that requires turning off antivirus before installing it. I haven't run anything yet.

Is that an immediate no, or are there legitimate reasons software might trigger a warning? I'm not looking to get a lecture after my account disappears.

Don't disable protection just to get a mystery executable running. That's a reasonable point to stop.

Some legitimate software can trigger false positives, though.

True, but a false positive should be investigated, not assumed. Check the publisher, download source, file reputation, and security vendor information.

And never enter your Riot login into a random launcher just because it promises extra features.

What if the site has a lot of positive reviews?

Reviews can be fabricated or unrelated to the actual file. They're only one piece of evidence.

If you already ran it, scan the system and secure your accounts from a trusted device if you suspect credential theft.
